Thomas, a boy of seven, looked at the shoe. He’d seen it before, adorning the foot of his archenemy, Maddy. But as he looked at it now, a new thought crossed his head. What if she wasn’t his enemy? What if he was prince charming and she was to be his princess?
He turned to Jonas, his older brother. “Have you ever been in love?”
Jonas, age twelve, shrugged. “Once.”
“How did you know you were in love?”
Another shrug. “Just did.”
Thomas picked up the shoe. He was pretty sure it was hers. He tossed it in a bush.
