One of the Huskies I walk is blind. She has slowly lost her sight over time. When I first met her, she could see but she’d lost one eye to glaucoma and her family was trying to save the other eye with eye drops. Thus far, they’ve been able to save the eye, but not the sight. Her brother, a husky mix, is really good about pinballing her away from hazards on our walks. She will sometimes walk next to him and he will guide her. He can be a goof, but he takes care of his sister. It’s sweet.

Daily Drabble 22: Red Wire Horse
The mystery of you makes me smile. I don’t know why someone chose to put you on their lawn, but I’m glad they did. I wonder if they made you or bought you from some art gallery or a thrift store. I wonder what other people think when they see you. I see story ideas. But I always see stories.
In my mind, you were found. A bit of trash left near the curb by a frustrated artist. But you were seen, taken and given a fresh coat of paint then placed in the front yard to protect the house.

Daily Drabble 21: Bevel Bottomed Bottle
The bevel bottomed bottle (say that fast five times) sitting in a cup was the last thing I saw. At least, it was the last thing I saw while I was still alive. For the very moment my eyes were lazily gazing at the bottle and wondering if I shouldn’t just toss it since it can’t stand on its own, I feel a crack that runs through me and my face pitches forward. It’s strange to feel the moment of your demise yet not know how or why it happened and to have your last thoughts be about a bottle.

Daily Drabble 20: Ink in His Fort
He’s watching you, he’s watching everyone from his fort. He has plans and he plots in his fort. If you are a cat or a human, he will get you. He’d get a dog in there were a dog in the house. He is the mastermind. He will manipulate and control the world! All will be beneath his paw! He sighs happily and stretches looking out at his domain. He will have world domination!
He thinks about leaving his fort and creating havoc. But he’s a bit tired. He stretches again and yawns. But later… he needs to nap now.

Drabble Dream 17: Three Grown Men
The man behind the desk loosened his tie. “The drop will be at the bookstore in the kids section.” The two men standing in front him exchanged looks.
“Won’t that look suspicious? Grown men sitting in the kids section?”
The first man shook his head. “We’re not going to look like three grown men.”
“Do you see them?” I pointed to the kids section.
“Do you mean the man and his sons?” Marisol asked.
I shook my head. “No, the three men just sitting at the table down there.”
She squinted, but could only see the boys and the man.

Daily Drabble 19: Chicken Wire in the Kitchen
What nobody expected was the cat.
He watched them fill the little plastic containers with dirt and seeds. They lined them up on the counter and watered them as the cat watched. But it wasn’t all that exciting so he walked away.
A couple of days later, he noticed the little pots had green things pointing up. He waited until they left before investigating. Climbing onto the cat tree closest to the island, he gaged the distance. It wasn’t too far. He jumped. A few of the sprouts bent under his weight.
The next day, they put up chicken wire.

Daily Drabble 18: Hot Late
Late night hot chocolate is listed in the menu as Hot Late. Perhaps some hip new lingo? It was delicious! Bunny ears and random thoughts. I am working on something secret. I’m no good at secrets. If anybody asks, I will tell them and be proud. Behind me, four older women discuss someone who doesn’t celebrate easter.
“Don’t they eat? The it’s an easter dinner.”
Is that logic sound? Don’t most people eat at least once a day? Do you? Maybe we are all eating easter dinner all the time.
But no… We eat many meals. Falling asleep while typing…

Daily Drabble 17: Terrible Poetry is Terrible (And picture too!)
Livin’ in a dome
Our beaver home
We gnaw on the wood
At times misunderstood
We manipulate
And create
We have the greatest plan
We are the Beaver Clan
Watch us swim so deep
The truth is what we keep
We smell like vanilla
Not like a gorilla
We manipulate
And create
We have the greatest plan
We are the Beaver Clan
We needn’t any tools
We’re very rarely fools
We’re waterproof
It’s not a spoof
We manipulate
And create
We have the greatest plan
We are the Beaver Clan
We have the greatest plan
We are the Beaver Clan

Daily Drabble 16: Psychic Penguin
If you find yourself on a glacier and a penguin stands before you, do not miss this opportunity to ask your fortune. Most penguins will just stare back, not comprehending. But if it’s the Psychic Penguin, you will learn amazing things.
“I speak in your dreams!” the Psychic Penguin shouts across the abyss of your mind. “Now ask me any question and I will tell you the truth. But you can only ask one question per dream. You will have to dream again if you have more to ask.”
Do you dare?
Do you care?
The Psychic Penguin is waiting...

Daily Drabble 15: Butterfly Bath
It was meant to be a bath for butterflies. But the butterflies eschewed it. The fairies came by in all their glitter and sparkle to see this thing in their glade. Once they saw that it was human made, they avoided it. All the other little critters and smaller fae thought they might give it a try. But none could quite get into it. Well, they could get into it, they could all get into it physically, but it just wasn't their jam. It was just too human a thing. So they left it for the ants who never came.

Daily Drabble 14: Library Shoe
Shoe found in the library |
“I left it at the library.”
“What?” Her mom looked at her daughter with the phone still pressed against her ear.
Celia sighed. “My shoe, mom. I left it.”
Her mom stared with a slack jaw. The person on the other end kept saying hello. “Sorry. I’m gonna have to call you back. Uh-huh. Okay, bye.” She hung up. “Now, what?”
“I left my shoe at the library ‘cause the librarian said the charming prince lives in the books. Now I wait for him to find it.”
“Celia, you don’t need a prince. Be more than a princess who waits.”

Daily Drabble 13: Pills
I had oral surgery today so I might be a bit loopy since I’m typing this on Vicodin. I’m not really a fan of having to take pills. I have a micro-esophagus so I have to take pills with water and have to take them one at a time. When I was eighteen, a pill got caught in my tiny esophagus and caused an ulcer. The irony is that I’d been teasing my younger sister saying she was going to get an ulcer because she stressed so much about everything. She laughed at me a bit. I totally deserved it.

Daily Drabble 12: Dead Bunny
Found in one of my journals from 2005 |
Even in death, this bunny looks active.
Why, when I look at this picture, does the word ‘cute’ pop into my mind? Is it a sociological predisposition that makes me feel that bunny equals cute? Or is it possible that I have a natural affinity for death, and therefore life, and cannot help but see the beauty? Decay is renewal beyond death. Life is sustained through death. Everything is cyclical in nature, life, history and spirituality. How can I not see the beauty that is in the cycle? In all cycles?
Or do I just think dead bunnies are cute?

Daily Drabble 11: Snow Monster
“Paint buckets are tasty!” The Snow Monster smiled, drooling paint. “But I want more. Something bigger, like Chicago…” The monster paused in the rumination. “No, not like Chicago; Chicago. I want to eat Chicago. Chicago and all around it. There are so many creatures there, it would be like a salad… greek or taco or chef or green to make a fantastic dinner. It will be so fun!”
The Snow Monster had never had salad before, but heard humans talk about these different ones.
“I will have to freeze them first.”
So it began snowing in the middle of Spring.Sunday, April 13, 2014
Daily Drabble 10: Brain
The brain fascinates and frightens me.
My sister has a brain injury, both of my grandmothers died of Alzheimer's, my sisters, my mother and I suffer from migraines. I have a friend who has epilepsy. I have read many books and articles about the study of the mind. The thing that has become painfully clear is that not much is known about the brain. Our thoughts, our memories, our passions, our desires are just so tenuous. We can lose them in a moment; we can lose them over time. They leave us so easily, these things we hold so dear.

Daily Drabble 9: Mischief
I’m on my lunch break when a trio of young almost teenagers burst into the Storytime Room where I’m microwaving my meal. They look surprised to see me.
“Can I help you?” If I had glasses, I would have pushed them up the bridge of my nose.
One of them crosses his legs and cups his crotch. “Oh, I have to pee so bad! Where’s the bathroom?”
I cock an eyebrow, showing him that I don’t believe him for a second, then point to the hall just behind them. “You just passed it.”
They stumble out of the room, giggling.
Could they be more clearly labeled? |

Daily Drabble 8: Signs of Spring
What a glorious day!
The sun is shining so bright, the air is light and all around me Spring is springing! I can see the tiniest of buds beginning to push their way out into the light. I breathe deep, taking in the fresh after the rain smell. The birds sing and share their happy music. I head home with a smile on my face a skip in my step…
*A-choo!*
A sneeze from the pollen in the air and the dander from the shedding pets.
Then, as I walk into the kitchen, there are the ants…

Daily Drabble 7: Does Not Work
The inscription reads, “does not work.”
So I flip it. In a far off room in the house, a bell rings.
So I flip it. In a far off room in the house, a bell rings.
Without a thought, I put the leash on the dog and we head out. It’s a cloudy, windy day; lots of smells to investigate. We keep a brisk pace and are soon back home.
Pet the dog, write the note, get the dog to go into his crate and give the dog his treat.
“See you later, pup!” I crouch down and close the door to his crate.
As I stand back up, a bag drops over my face.

Daily Drabble 6: Chickens
“She’s gonna live with us,” Joel announces. “And nobody’s going to eat her.”
Cherise nods, barely taking her eyes off the TV. She’d been waiting all week for a time when no one was around and she wasn’t going to let Joel’s sudden change in routine destroy that for her.
The chicken bocked, bringing her back to reality. Cherise looks around at Joel’s office and wonders at the mess.
How, no, WHERE did he expect to keep a chicken?
How, no, WHERE did he expect to keep a chicken?
“Will we get to eat her eggs?”
Joel shook his head.
“Fine.” Charise gritted her teeth.
“She doesn’t lay eggs anymore.”

Daily Drabble 5: Basement (part 1)
After several days of rain I stayed out late one night and came home to a dark house.
I went quietly to the basement stairs and opened the door to pungent smells.
I hoped there would be no brackish sewage water.
I would have to reset the sump.
I flip the light switch.
Nothing.
I try the hall switch. Nothing.
I grit my teeth. “Fuse box and sump pump.”
I start down the stairs to the sounds of the rain and thunder.
My feet slip, I grab at the wall, but spill forward. I land in freezing water face first.
Different basement, different flood, same feet |

Daily Drabble 4: Headless Speculation
The inscription under the statue read, Genovese. Genovese, one of the biggest crime families in New York. The family the Godfather movies were based on.
I wonder about her. How did she end up in Mount Carmel Cemetery, so close to Chicago, without a head? Did she flee the islands of New York only to die here? Was she kind and good? Was she killed? I suppose if her body has no head like her statue shows, it wasn’t a natural death. Did she know her assailant? Was it a lover? Someone who was jealous? An enemy of her family?Sunday, April 6, 2014
Daily Drabble 3: Forgotten Shoe
Thomas, a boy of seven, looked at the shoe. He’d seen it before, adorning the foot of his archenemy, Maddy. But as he looked at it now, a new thought crossed his head. What if she wasn’t his enemy? What if he was prince charming and she was to be his princess?
He turned to Jonas, his older brother. “Have you ever been in love?”
Jonas, age twelve, shrugged. “Once.”
“How did you know you were in love?”
Another shrug. “Just did.”
Thomas picked up the shoe. He was pretty sure it was hers. He tossed it in a bush.

Daily Drabble 2: A Walk at Dusk
The houses I walk by want to be castles or mansions or maybe they are and they’re just miniaturized versions. A dog barks from a yard three houses away. The sky is cobalt blue. An open window to a party inside where men brag about tax breaks and make jokes about being born on the right side of the tracks. The mini-mansion is lit so bright I can see right into the dining room where a woman sits in a straight backed chair with a smile plastered on her face. The sky is black; jeweled stars and a cresting moon.

Daily Drabble 1: The Meta Drabble
I’m going to start posting Daily Drabbles!
It shouldn’t be too hard, right? Just a hundred words a day? And some days it’ll be my Drabble Dreams counting as my Daily Drabble. Oh! And I shall include pictures! Possibly a photograph or something I drew or painted or created in some other medium. I can dedicate them and, if I EVER get better about mailing things, send my “creations” to the dedicated people.
If someone dislikes it, well, they can just be glad it’s only one hundred words.
This is my blog and I shall post what I like. Yay!
